We all hate mainstream news media, but why can't we create something better?
All of us hate the media. We all think it's hopelessly biased. Why though haven't we been able to create a better alternative?
That's the critical question I want to address here and that touches on the point of this website.
There already exists an alternative to mainstream media in conservative/right-wing media. Plenty of money has been thrown at it too, with the ultra-wealthy obviously having good reason to fund politics that counters the left's anti-corporate, regulatory agenda. One outlet, Fox News, even manages to compete at the biggest-fish level of network TV.
But for all the alternatives we've seen and snide dismissals of mainstream news as "legacy media," they remain the main game in town. One way you can see this is in how conservatives still follow and obsessively complain about what they have to say. They do so with good reason because the mainstream media still breaks most of the biggest stories that drive the news cycle, prestige outlets like the New York Times are still widely seen to play the role of so-called papers of record, and it may be hard to admit but, they still do a better job than conservative media at the news, despite their bias.
Why can't we have the quality of mainstream news media without the progressive bias?
That can all be proven — and this site was built to show people things just like that — but just take my word for it at the moment. Conservative/right-wing media has failed to dethrone mainstream media. That much is perfectly clear. The left is winning because they're winning the information wars and whatever counter-narrative conservative media is providing is not getting through to the masses at near the same level.
So this should concern you. Why can't we create a better alternative? As noted above, it's not like there's been any shortage of money in conservative media (Though not all right-wing politics is so favorable to corporations, there's still a wide path available to us to take anywhere to the right of the left's militant anti-capitalist positions) and it shouldn't take much money to create things in the age of the Internet anyway. The fundamental problem I believe is just that conservative/right-wing media is not good at what it does. It's too biased — in a particularly problematic partisan sense, rather than the more subtle bias of mainstream media in its progressive perspective — and it's not a viable alternative for normal, not-already-right-wing people to get the news.
The big idea I had when coming up with this site was to ask: why can't we have the quality of mainstream news media without the progressive bias? That's it. Take mainstream news media and unscrew its progressive bias and you have something perfect. That's the goal of the news half of this site.
I don't expect to be able to singlehandedly defeat mainstream media but I do intend to take a real shot at it and help to show others the way we all can, with more resources or by simply working together collaboratively, successfully fight it.
I'd like to take a real shot at providing what I think is a highly valuable service. Now, I say that's one half of the site because obviously it wouldn't be too fun to do nothing but play objective chronicler in politics. There's the politics/agenda side too. That's the other half. But the idea from the beginning was to separate the two halves as clearly as possible, which is achieved through the front page literally being split into two sides and the blue/red color highlights that mark straight news and all opinion/commentary respectively.
Being objective on the news isn't the easiest thing though. We're all biased and there are some stories that are so politically loaded, and others where the left cares so little for the truth and that are so likely to lead to things like rioting, that I can understand the reluctance to hear out all sides and attack every single issue as honestly as possible. These are the sorts of concerns that will be discussed in this part of the site. Basically, I believe a balance can be struck and the problem overcome.
Expect more on this subject.
